Help Is On the Way: our current Annual Fund Campaign
How can you help to ensure that St. Louis children are provided with the coaching, the guidance, and the safety they need as they grow and learn?
The Homework Helpers program, started in the St. Louis Public Library system in 1997, offers St. Louis kids a friendly atmosphere where they can seek help on their homework projects – whether it be a single assignment or an ongoing project. Operating system-wide in the crucial after-school hours of the day, the St. Louis Public Library provides trained helpers to work with our kids in order to help them reach their full potential.
Did you know that in the city of St. Louis:
- There are more than 86,000 children
- More than 33% of school age children live in poverty
- More than 47% of children live in single-parent homes
- 2,716 children are homeless
- More than 26% of births are to mothers without a high school diploma
- More than 16% of students drop out of high school
- The three hours after school are known to be the most dangerous for children without supervision and structure.

The St. Louis Public Library’s Homework Helper program helps give area kids a solid educational start in their formative years. And an educated populace is essential to maintaining a healthy community with a robust economy. The school children of today will be the workforce and the community leadership of tomorrow, and Homework Helpers makes sure they get off to a great start. What better way to ensure a bright future for St. Louis than to invest in the city’s future generations?
With ten years now under its belt, this program has expanded to serve more than 1000 school-aged kids per week. And Homework Helpers needs to continue growing. Our goal for 2008 is to double the number of homework helpers throughout the library system so that we can triple the number of children served.
