The St. Louis Public Library has 15 branch libraries in addition to Central Library, its research headquarters located in downtown St. Louis. The Adopt-A-Branch program is an innovative project earmarking private donations from individuals or businesses to provide specific branch libraries with essential resources to meet the unique opportunities and needs of their specific city neighborhoods. Specially-designed for the neighborhood served, the Adopt-A-Branch program can provide for a variety of services, resources, and capital needs including, but not limited to:
- Addition of books and other learning and entertainment materials that are of specific interest to the users of the branch
- Funding for the purchase of new and/or upgraded computers and other technological resources to better enhance the existing services
- Strengthening of the Homework Helper and Public Technology Assistants programs to ensure full and quality staff coverage for high-use times
- Distinctive in-house programs for children and adults as well as specialized outreach programs tailored to the surrounding neighborhood needs and interest
- While many branches have been completely renovated in recent years, heavy usage requires replacement of furniture and other library furnishings
- A few branches have not yet been renovated but are in great need. Located in some of the city’s neediest communities, these branches in some cases represent a haven of stability to residents. As past experience has shown, neighborhood library renewal will revitalize these communities and provide new opportunities for the residents.
